Portrait is the highest-value shape
4:5 (1080 × 1350) occupies more vertical space in the feed than a square, which means more of the screen is yours as someone scrolls. It is the tallest ratio the feed shows without cropping.
Stories and reels have unsafe edges
The 9:16 canvas is 1080 × 1920, but interface elements sit over the top and bottom of it: the profile row and close button at the top, reply and action controls at the bottom. Keep text and faces roughly 250 px inside those edges.

Frequently asked questions
- What size should an Instagram post be?
- 1080 × 1080 for square, 1080 × 1350 for portrait, and 1080 × 566 for the widest landscape crop. Portrait gets the most screen space.
- Why does Instagram crop my photo?
- Because it falls outside the supported ratio range. Anything taller than 4:5 or wider than 1.91:1 is cropped to fit, so resize before you upload.
- Does Instagram compress my images?
- Yes — uploads are re-encoded server-side. Uploading at 1080 px wide and reasonable quality gives the encoder a clean source and generally looks better than uploading a huge file.
- What size is an Instagram story?
- 1080 × 1920, a 9:16 vertical canvas.
- Are my images uploaded to a server?
